Warming Shelter Arranged During Cold Weather

THANK YOU to the Shelbyville, Indiana Parks and Recreation Department, Dennis Radkin from Shelby County Emergency Management Agency- Indiana, and Sandra Hall from the Shelby County Health Department for their quick work to get a Warming Shelter up and running over Christmas weekend!

Individuals and families had holiday obligations; several local Nonprofits were busy with community meals, gift distributions, and were short-staffed for the holidays. This makes the work that was accomplished over the holiday weekend to serve those in need more remarkable.

Food donations from Major Health Partners/Major Hospital, Papa Johns Pizza, Shelbyville VFW Post 2695 , Linne's Bakery and Cafe, Crossroad Community Church, Cagney's Pizza King, Community Dinner Group, the Pickleball Club from Parks and Rec, and anonymous givers helped feed those who utilized the shelter. (*This doesn't include Kentucky Fried Сhicken and Jimmy John's who were also ready to help with food!) Volunteers and staff from Parks and Rec gave their time to help in the space.

It was amazing to see the community come together to address an urgent need. To help prepare for any future warming shelter needs, the following items would be appreciated:

  • Pillows

  • Socks

  • Sleeping Bags

  • Hygiene Products

They can be donated to the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency. Contact Dennis Radkin (317) 512-5043 for more details.
