Library Announces New Kits for Patrons with Alzheimer’s Disease Multisensory Items Trigger Memories
Shelby County Public Library now offers Memories in a Box, nine new multisensory kits available for the community to check out. The purpose of the kits is basic, but essential: improving and sustaining the quality of life for those living with dementia, their caregivers, families, and friends.
Each box contains stimulating activities, picture books, and mobile apps to help patients and loved ones remain engaged with the outside world and each other. Current subjects include: Tools/Handyman; Art; Fishing; Laundry; Ocean; Fall Colors/Birds; Bells and Chimes; Pets; and Puzzle Fun.
We are very grateful to the participating members of the Shelby County Active Aging Coalition and the Blue River Foundation for providing the funding and support for this important project. These new items were introduced to the public during the Longest Day Walk held on June 20.
The Longest Day® is held on the day with the most light — the summer solstice – when the Earth's Northern Hemisphere is tilted most directly towards the sun, resulting in the longest day of the year. Participants fight the darkness of Alzheimer's and all other dementia through a fundraising activity of their choice. Funds advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Memories in a Box can be borrowed from the Shelby County Public Library. For further information, call the main library at (317) 398-7121.
